Just a lapdog in a factory Waiting for the whistle to blow I'm rundown I'm a battery Rusted up beginning to go It can't go on this way I know Yesterday seems like a beautiful dream And I'm all about letting go I sure could use a little heart You let me down But the sun will shine again You let me down But I'm better off that way This day is a bad day I'm not getting anything down In the pits I'm not even scratching Waiting for an idea to come It can't go on this way I know Yesterday seems like a beautiful dream And I'm all about letting go I sure could use a little heart You let me down But the sun will shine again You let me down But I'm better off that way Now I don't mind Being all by myself In my prime But all the time Gets too hard You let me down But the sun will shine again You let me down But I'm better off that way

Pacemaker 03:53
Damn my inability to make that change Don't mind humility But I'm estranged I can't elevate It may be fragility I'm running from Lost my virginity at 21 On my neighbour's lawn Derelict heart Pacemaker Oh my derelict heart Pacemaker I'm letting you down Love is a lottery Life's crystal ball Live by economy No risk at all When you're so damn small Derelict heart Pacemaker Oh my derelict heart Pacemaker I'm letting you down You've got all matter of time

Half light creeping Shake off sleeping I feel alright Don't mind just lying Waking distant You insisted that we were fine No one knows about tomorrow You said all our dreams would last But they don't They just pass And you said both our lives would change But they just stay the same Sorry, sorry... Two disheveled Held together in feathered light The weighted quiet is a warning Once bright beings Hochzeit feelings Candid bite We weren't scared about nothing You said all our dreams would last But they don't They just pass And you said both our lives would change But they just stay the same Sorry, sorry... I walk by every door In the hope of recognising the familiar A cue or trigger I walk by everyone In the hope of recognising the emotion Void devotion You said all our dreams would last But they don't They just pass And you said both our lives would change But they just stay the same Sorry, sorry... Hang dog Beaten Wake up sleeping I can't think right Who knows about tomorrow

If you're not gonna talk to me Then how can we get along Welling up with emotion I put your name in a song Maybe a moment of violence At least the feeling was real I always try to be honest But there are things I can't reveal I'm a mild psychotic Of the functioning kind Neither guided by voices Nor perpetrating a crime Got a big old ego With a creative tongue Just a fictional cowboy Who keeps forgetting where he's from It's gonna take a long time to be right to love again And if this were a movie Well I'd be played by Timothy Spall Quiet and friendly So motivated and all Absorbing the cruelty like a human shield Celebrating my body Well just the parts I keep concealed I've been playing it backwards Like I'm looking for signs Every hidden expression I've studied multiple times Got a realisation I'm in a futile game Better growing my beard out Than slowly growing more insane It's gonna take a long time to be right to love again Sometimes I feel nothing at all Sometimes I feel nothing at all Sometimes I feel like everything depends on you I don't depend on you
5.
While We Can 03:30
Come with me and I will take you to a place I've never, ever been but they say it's something There's an open bar No lines Except the folks doing coke all the time (All the time) I will never be the one who calls you names When you feel the heat we'll head out country There's a friend I know He lives up north I got him though a hard time when he divorced (He's divorced) We're on the juice again What a year it's been And so far everything's rosy Let's talk about moving in I can see this now I know my mind And this love feels like it's the medicinal kind Come with me and we can head straight into the sun No one has ever been but it sure is something Well baby you're the star And I'm your man We've gotta make love while we can (While we can)
6.
Daylight 04:15
Daylight All the stars are gone Help me on the train and take me home I've gone missing Is that the way now? Nothing sure will last Like the voices of the people that we pass I don't listen And I can't find that light anymore in our eyes And I can't see that light anymore in our eyes Another grey sky Try to shake it off Everyday we come to terms with what we've lost And what's missing Is that the way now? Nothing sure will last Like the voices of the people that we pass I don't listen And I can't find that light anymore in our eyes And I can't see that light anymore in our eyes And I can't find that light...

I live for this dance I use to stand around waiting to fall I live for this dance I use to kill time pacing the floor I live for this dance, I turn I live for this dance, I burn Someone took the tired away from my bones Antipodean crawl (I'm tearing it up) Found my foot in the door (I'm tearing it up) Hung myself on the wall (I'm tearing it up) Made a hammer out of blood, sweat and toil I live for this dance Someone took a tyre and made it a home I live for this dance Someone tried squeezing gold from a stone I live for this dance, I turn I live for this dance, I burn Someone took the tired away from my bones Antipodean crawl (I'm tearing it up) Found my foot in the door (I'm tearing it up) Hung myself on the wall (I'm tearing it up) Made a monster out of leaves in the fall I live for this dance, I turn I live for this dance I've learned it's the only thing that keeps me alive
8.
Lay down with me We deserve our time in the sun It feels good to be loved It feels good to be lovers Gentle teacher I have given in to your touch I know who I am I know who I am when we touch We incubate and cancel our vacation Enforced island time I like it alone I like it alone with you Stand here with me Let's open up ourselves to the world I love what you've done I love what you've done to my world We must rely upon the nature of our interaction The parts conspire to spin in place Creating our attraction Play me that song I love
9.
Marco & Me 05:06
I've been sat here, waiting Wheels in my mind Turning at each thought I have Until the spokes align Reject all earthly love and emotional ties Disconnect desire and learn to give up control Time to purify Marco looked away As I explained my side Marco said that my position wasn't justified He said... “If you rejected love (like you get to decide) Then you'd become apart Not one with the world Lost and petrified Then nothing matters Nothing matters at all”
10.
I am tired Down and drifting Out of fight and over everything We are fading No one forced it I won't fend off love's decline As we tear There are no false words We go quietly We go quiet Slowly we break apart This is too hard No more plans and sharing our dreams While you slept I kissed you delicately Then just lay there thinking backwards Sorting through the reels of our life As we tear There are no false words We go quietly We go quiet Slowly we break apart This is too hard

about

Washed up on the banks of a relationship like so much drift wood cleaved from sure foundations...how does one come to identify and love “the self” after this emotional schism? What can be salvaged and nurtured? How does one find the motivation and energy to move through the necessary gears of daily life?

These are some of the questions that carry like currents through the songs of Curious Growth, the new album from Berlin based, New Zealand songwriter Richie Setford. If one were to give a narrative structure to this collection of songs, a story in 10 chapters let's say, the title card for each chapter would read something like this: A Relationship Is Revived; A Relationship Frays; A Relationship Ends; Depression; Purging; New Light; A Psychological Evaluation; A Return To Normal Thought; An Affirmation Of Life; Joy In Others or A Celebration Of Togetherness.

A well trodden arc to be sure, but one that is personalised and filtered through this songwriter's unique lens. Whether designed this way or not, Curious Growth proves to be a cathartic body of work that explores the human condition under emotional stress. These songs don't necessarily have any answers just an understanding that one must endure the grind of existence as best one can.
