Crickets

by Richie Setford

/

about

There's a type of cabin fever attached to this Kafkaesque tale of a somewhat delusional man suffering sleep disorder and contemplating his position within the animal hierarchy. Written in isolation one NZ summer and realised in Berlin, 2017.

lyrics

There's a rainy mist tonight
And the crickets come inside
Yesterday I found their hole and I filled it full of stones
Body parts lie scattered
Like a storm destroyed the trees
I must seem to them an impatient kind
I saw ones clamps upon the hind

Your whistling don't make it right
How am I ever gonna sleep tonight?

Some go crackling, some just cry
And some were only born to die
I've got power to decide, but I stay quiet
Come share it with me, live my life
Born a daughter, died a wife
I've got a ragged song to greet the moon and wings that can't take flight

I formed a plan to live outside
In a hut of sheepskin and possum hide
With a meat hook hung above the door and a plant that catches flies
And everyday I feel the cold
The motor shudders but I keep going
Was it yesterday I found their hole and filled it full of stones

I only mind when I'm wide awake at night
What if I could transfer skin?
What if I could transfer sight?
Then I would begin to metamorphosise
And I feel I'm already gone
I eat the worms and sing their song
